Abstract

High blood pressure (hypertension) is considered a global health crisis by the World Health Organization (WHO). It is a major risk factor for death and disability. As the most common chronic condition encountered in primary healthcare settings, implementing therapy to lower and maintain blood pressure within target ranges is crucial. Based on the data from the integrated primary care facility (POSYANDU) " Ngudi Waras" for the elderly in Senden, Tohudan, Colomadu, Karanganyar, indicates that 50% of residents suffer from hypertension. Addressing the issues faced by these residents, we organized a community service initiative to help manage the high blood pressure affecting a large portion of the population—a condition that poses a risk for developing other serious ailments such as heart disease and stroke. The intervention involved isometric training using hand-grip devices, a method recommended by the American Heart Association. Following participation in this program that held twice a week for 8 weeks resulted in a reduction in the average systolic blood pressure. This community service activity demonstrates the benefits of the efforts in lowering and preventing hypertension. Controlled blood pressure is expected to help prevent catastrophic illnesses like heart disease and stroke. Furthermore, this initiative aims to support the success of the six pillars of health transformation, specifically the transformation of primary care services.
