Abstract

Hypercholesterolemia is one of the predisposing factors for cardiovascular disease and often presents without specific symptoms in its early stages, resulting in the condition frequently going unnoticed by the community. Early detection through cholesterol level screening accompanied by health education is needed as a promotive and preventive effort to increase public awareness of the risks associated with abnormal cholesterol levels. This community service activity aimed to enhance community awareness about hypercholesterolemia and support early detection through blood cholesterol screening in Sumber Village, Klaten Regency, Central Java, Indonesia. The activity was implemented through three main stages: health education, cholesterol level assessment using the point-of-care testing (POCT) method, and individualized education based on the screening results. A total of 100 participants took part in the entire series of activities. The screening results showed that 42 participants (42%) had cholesterol levels within the normal category, 44 participants (44%) were in the borderline category, and 14 participants (14%) were classified as abnormal. Overall, 58% of participants had cholesterol levels that were not within the normal category and therefore required greater attention to contributing factors and appropriate health follow-up. Participants with cholesterol levels above the normal category received education on adopting a healthy diet, increasing physical activity, maintaining a healthy body weight, and seeking further examination at healthcare facilities. These findings indicate that integrating health education with POCT-based cholesterol screening can serve as an applicable promotive and preventive approach to support the early detection of hypercholesterolemia. Similar activities should be conducted periodically to increase public awareness and regular health check-ups.
